Washington Delays First Quarter Reporting for Paid Family and Medical Leave

The Washington Employment Security Department has delayed the deadline for first quarter payments and reports for paid family and medical leave. This means that employers do not need to submit payments and reports for the first quarter in April. Rather, first quarter payments and reports should now be submitted together with second quarter payments and reports by July 31, 2019.

This change is for 2019 only. There will be no fines or penalties for reporting and remitting first quarter reports and payments in July. Employers will still file two reports – one for the first quarter and another for the second quarter. This change only applies to paid family and medical leave reports – reporting for unemployment insurance remains the same. See reporting timeline FAQs.

Employers will file reports by logging in to the SecureAccess Washington (SAW) system. Instructions for reporting will be available soon.

The state is alerting accountants, payroll companies, and employer agents about the change but recommends that employers forward any information received about the change to them. Specific information for employer agents is also available.
