Updates on Child Support Payment Processing During Hurricane Florence

APA’s Government Relations Task Force (GRTF) Subcommittee on Child Support and Other Garnishments is providing payroll professionals with updates on how the processing of child support payments could be impacted in states affected by Hurricane Florence.

Georgia—The state disbursement unit (SDU) will be open as normal based on current weather predictions.

North Carolina—The SDU closed on September 13 at 2 p.m. EDT, but it is anticipated that it will reopen on September 17 [NC SDU, phone call, 9-13-18].

South Carolina—There is no central SDU in South Carolina. Payments are processed by clerks of court, and state government offices and county offices have been closed in several counties due to the storm. A list of closings will be updated as necessary. This means that payments and mail could be delayed in certain counties as a result of closures.

Virginia—The SDU plans to be operational during the storm. If state offices do close, EFT payments will continue to be processed as normal. Check payments may be delayed if mail is delayed, so employers are encouraged to remit payments electronically.
