Rhode Island Proposes Paid Sick Leave Regulations

The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training has proposed regulations to implement its paid sick leave (PSL) law, which goes into effect on July 1, 2018.

The regulations include two provisions that vary from other state PSL laws:

  1. Employees would accrue PSL while on paid leave (holiday, personal time, sick time, and vacation time); and
  2. The requirement of documentation from an employee after an absence of three days would be considered unreasonable and waived if the cost to the employee (for administrative, governmental or medical fees, or transportation costs) exceeds two times his or her hourly rate of pay.

Comments on the proposed regulations are due by the end of the day on April 8. A public hearing will be held on April 2 in Rhode Island.
