During National Payroll Week, September 3-7, the Minnesota Department of Revenue (DOR) is highlighting information and resources available to payroll professionals through daily emails [DOR, Emails 9-4-18 – 9-7-18]. The DOR is an NPW Supporter. Topics have been about free educational resources, employee questions about withholding, new levy account in e-Services, and W-2 and 1099 submission changes.
Employee withholding questions are a hot topic due to federal tax reform and changes to the federal Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate. The DOR advises employees who have made recent changes to their federal withholding to review their Minnesota withholding. Employees may use the 2017 Form W-4 as a guide to determine whether they are having enough Minnesota tax withheld. If the number of allowances on the employee’s 2017 form is different than the 2018 Form W-4, the employee can complete Minnesota Form W-4MN, 2018 Minnesota Employee Withholding Allowance/Exemption Certificate. Employees can use the allowances calculated on the 2017 Form W-4 as a guide to complete the state 2018 Form W-4MN.
