Major Overhaul of Minnesota Wage Payment Laws

Minnesota has enacted sweeping wage theft legislation that took effect July 1, 2019, with the criminal provisions of the law taking effect August 1, 2019. The law creates new pay rate notice, pay statement, and recordkeeping requirements and additional penalties for employers [H.B. 2, L. 2019].

The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) has posted resources and information about the new changes and requirements on its website. Guidance for employers, a Q&A, a summary, and a sample employee notice are available. Employers can also sign up for an email newsletter for additional information.

According to the Q&A, the DLI’s primary focus for the next few months will be on providing employers with the information and assistance they need to implement the requirements of the new law.
