IRS and Several States Offer Hurricane Michael Disaster Relief

Several states are offering tax relief to affected employers in the wake of Hurricane Michael, including Florida, one of the hardest hit states. The IRS is also offering federal tax relief for employers affected by the hurricane.

Federal Tax Relief

The IRS extended filing deadlines for victims of Hurricane Michael. The tax relief postpones various tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred starting on October 7, 2018. Affected individuals and businesses have until February 28, 2019, to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period. This includes the October 31, 2018, and January 31, 2019, deadlines for quarterly payroll and excise tax returns.

Florida Tax Relief

An emergency order from the Florida Department of Revenue extends certain filing and payment due dates for employers in 16 designated counties impacted by Hurricane Michael. The order extends the September and October 2018 reporting period due dates for returns, reports, and payments for several taxes, including reemployment tax (i.e., unemployment insurance tax) to December 7, 2018. For electronic filers, submissions initiated by 5 p.m. on December 7 will be timely filed. Florida has no income tax.

Other States Offering Tax Relief

Additional states offering relief include: Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Maine, and New Jersey.
