State tax agencies in Iowa and Nebraska are offering relief to employers and taxpayers affected by recent severe flooding. Employers should contact the state agencies directly for specific information regarding filing and payment extensions and penalty waivers.

Iowa

The Iowa Department of Revenue (IDOR) is offering relief to employers in any of the 58 counties (as of March 29, 2019) that have been declared disaster areas due to recent flooding. The IDOR is offering affected employers a 30-day extension and suspension of any penalty or interest for payments or returns that were due on or before March 31, 2019. This applies to all tax types, including withholding taxes [IDOR, News Release, 3-19-19; rev. 3-29-19].

The IDOR is also providing additional state tax relief similar to federal tax relief offered by the IRS. Employers that have businesses located in Freemont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, and Woodbury Counties have until July 31, 2019, to file quarterly withholding returns due between March 12, 2019, and July 31, 2019. However, this does not apply to withholding deposits [IDOR, News Release, 4-2-19].

Nebraska

The Nebraska Department of Revenue (NDOR) is offering relief to employers affected by the recent severe flooding. Affected employers unable to timely file withholding returns, remit withholding payments, or access computers, files, or tax records should contact the NDOR directly at 402-471-5729. Additional relief has been granted by the NDOR for specific tax types, not including withholding [NDOR, News Release 4-3-19].

Frequently Asked Questions for employers regarding what to do if tax records have been destroyed are available on the NDOR’s website, along with general tax information for those impacted by natural disasters.
