Employers Must Use Correct FIPS Code for Rhode Island Child Support Payments

Written by PayrollOrg Staff | Jul 3, 2018 2:46:30 PM

When submitting Rhode Island child support payments to the state disbursement unit (SDU), employers must use the correct FIPS (Federal Information Process Standards) pay code for Rhode Island – 44002. Rhode Island and Connecticut child support payments are processed by the same SDU in Hartford, Connecticut. Because of this, employers are sometimes changing the Rhode Island FIPS pay code to the one for Connecticut in error [Office of Child Support Enforcement, Notice to Employers and Payroll Companies, 6-29-18].

Rhode Island and Connecticut child support payments have been processed in the same SDU located in Hartford, Connecticut, since 2010. However, each state has its own unique FIPS pay code. Employers need to make sure the EFT file format and/or payroll processing software does not change the Rhode Island FIPS pay code to the Connecticut FIPS pay code, based on the Hartford address. Employers must use the FIPS pay code that appears on the IWO (without changing it).
