In the May 2021 edition of the Office of Child Support Enforcement’s Child Support Report, the Employer Corner column features an APA article, “Calling on States to Support Electronic Child Medical Support Notices.”
State child support agencies send the National Medical Support Notice (NMSN) to employers when dependent care is available to employees and coverage is ordered by a court. Soon, OCSE will launch an electronic NMSN to allow states and employers to transmit the forms electronically.
The APA shared that the current cost of mailing a paper NMSN is between $0.70 to $1.00 because the form is 10 full pages. Transmitting the e-NMSN will offer significant savings and speed the process of getting healthcare coverage to children. Payroll professionals suggest that the offset in administration, printing, and mailing costs, should convince states to implement the electronic version.
