The article, “Tips for Communicating With Payroll Teams,” written by APA member Cari Breitinger, CPP, is featured in the October 2022 edition of the Child Support Report, a monthly e‑newsletter published by the federal Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE).
Payroll teams communicate with child support agencies about a range of issues. In the article, Breitinger offers help on how agency staff can reach payroll professionals. Tips include introducing yourself. In addition to providing your name, title, and agency, callers should provide a clear reason for their call and what personal identifiable information is involved.
Employers should be identified through their federal employer identification number (FEIN) to make sure the correct parties are talking. This also allows payroll professionals to investigate whether the individual is their employee and the Income Withholding Order is accurate.
Because the individual may not be an employee, could be under a different FEIN, or left employment, callers should provide the last four digits of the employee’s social security number.
