APA Is There for Swearing-In of New IRS Commissioner

On October 1, Charles P. (Chuck) Rettig was sworn in as the 49th Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. Rettig was confirmed in September by the Senate in a vote of 64-33. His term as commissioner will expire on November 12, 2022.

More than 100 IRS managers and headquarters staff, along with previous IRS commissioners, attended the swearing-in ceremony, along with the APA’s Senior Director of Publications, Education, and Government Relations Mike O’Toole, Esq. A core mission of the APA is providing representation for payroll professionals before federal, state, and local governments.

Commissioner Rettig praised the hard work and dedication of the more than 80,000 IRS employees as they continue to implement changes brought about by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA; Pub. L. 115-97) and prepare for the upcoming tax filing season. Rettig will face a host of important issues, including how to revise Form W-4 to comply with the TCJA while avoiding the serious problems in the draft 2019 version pointed out in comments by the APA and other groups.
