Withholding for Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave Begins October 1

The Massachusetts Department of Family and Medical Leave is reminding employers that contribution withholding for paid family and medical leave (PFML) begins on October 1, 2019. Previously, contributions were scheduled to begin July 1. A guide for employers is available on the state agency’s website.

Required Withholding

Effective October 1, 2019, employers must begin withholding PFML contributions from qualified employee earnings. Employers will be responsible for remitting employee and (if applicable) employer contributions for the fourth quarter (October 1-December 31) through MassTaxConnect by January 31, 2020.

Exemption Application Deadline

Employers that offer paid leave benefits at least as generous as those required under the PFML law have until December 20, 2019, to apply for an exemption.
