SSA Changes BSO Registration Process

Written by Jyme Mariani, Esq. | Sep 22, 2022 6:26:04 PM

The Social Security Administration (SSA) updated its Business Services Online (BSO) webpage to notify filers that, effective September 19, 2022, the BSO registration process changed for new users [SSA, Business Services Online, 9-19-22].

After registering to use BSO or any new BSO service, SSA now will mail users an activation code to complete the process. SSA said this includes businesses submitting W-2 and W-2c reports. SSA will mail the activation code to the employer, whose employer identification number is used, at the employer’s business address registered with the IRS. The business should receive the activation code within two weeks.

New Users Must Activate Before Filing Season

Employers that are new users cannot report wages to SSA until the activation code is entered to complete the registration process. Businesses should register for BSO before Form W-2 reporting season in January to ensure compliance prior to submitting Forms W-2.
