Employers Can Now Apply for IRIS TCC

On December 12, the IRS started accepting applications for Transmitter Control Codes (TCCs) for its new Information Returns Intake System (IRIS). IRIS, which is the IRS’s new Form 1099 filing platform, is scheduled to open on January 9, 2023.

The IRS expects processing applications will take 45 days, but it hopes to initially process IRIS TCC codes within a few days. IRIS users will need separate TCCs for the internet channel and the A2A (Application to Application) channel. Users cannot use the TCCs for the Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) system for IRIS.

More Details on IRIS

The IRS will open IRIS’s web portal internet channel first. This portal will allow users to enter data by keying it in or uploading it from the CSV template, which the IRS will provide. The CSV template will be limited to 100 entries at a time, but the template may be uploaded as many times as necessary. After users enter the information, they will be able to download and print Forms 1099.

IRIS (like the FIRE system) will allow users to submit Forms 1099 electronically to states that participate in the Combined Federal/State Filing (CF/SF) Program. Users who key in data will be able to opt in to confirm they are sending this information to a state. IRIS will work like FIRE for bulk transmitters using the CF/SF program.
