Child Support Report Features Employer’s Perspective on e-IWO

The article e-IWO from the Employer’s Perspective, written by APA’s chair of the Government Relations Task Force (GRTF) Child Support Subcommittee Corrinne Flores, is featured in the November edition of Child Support Report, a monthly e‑newsletter published by the federal Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE).

“Electronic Income Withholding Orders for child support (e-IWO) has a proven track record for being an efficient and cost-effective way for states to send and employers to process IWOs,” Flores said, noting that all state child support agencies use the e-IWO process. “There are several benefits to using e-IWO, including faster processing … the ability to send personally identifiable information securely, (and) cost savings,” said Flores.

Given the improved efficiency e-IWOs provide, it would be beneficial for employers to decrease the number of paper IWOs they receive from states. “One way to ensure states issue e-IWOs to participating employers is to provide training to local offices and caseworkers,” Flores said. This could be accomplished through a coordinated effort between APA GRTF members and employers, by providing “training and outreach via webinars or meetings to share the benefits of using e-IWO from an employer’s perspective.”

As the benefits of e-IWO make themselves apparent, increased partnership between employers and government agencies can take e-IWO to the next level.
