Workshop Navigates Complexities of Different Worker Types, Multiple Jobs
Payroll Congress 2026 provides payroll professionals with the keys that unlock many complex payroll challenges.
In his workshop, “Different Worker Types and Multiple Jobs,” presenter Michael Dupuis, CPP, tackled one such challenge: the payroll implications for organizations that have multiple companies and different worker types.
The newly added workshop was presented today as part of the Payroll Management and Operations education track. This track offers workshops that equip payroll professionals with the knowledge needed to maintain accurate payroll processes and stay ahead of compliance challenges.
“This was a high level of foundation to consider multiple instances," said Thuan Tran, CPP, Payroll Manager for Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston Texas. "If we had another session, I would like to have had more details to go into real scenarios."
The topic of different worker types and multiple jobs is especially relevant for payroll professionals in today’s ever-evolving workplace, where employers are seeing an increase in employees holding multiple positions.
“Professionals today are seeing workforce changes and the impacts of the increased use of multiple worker types and instances where an employee has multiple jobs with an organization,” said Dupuis, an HCM consulting manager. “Potential compliance and payroll issues can arise in this type of organization when payroll professionals don’t have the knowledge they need.”
Throughout the workshop, Dupuis helped attendees better understand the payroll challenges of employees working multiple positions and provided guidance on wages, tax withholding, compliance, and reporting, so payroll professionals can effectively navigate these complex situations. Attendees received actionable tools to help them proactively stay compliant in their workplaces.
Sharing this material with a live audience enabled Dupuis and his audience to connect, share, and learn from each other’s experiences. Workshop participants were introduced to new, practical strategies that they can apply immediately in their day-to-day work.
“I hope attendees walked away with ways to manage and advise for these types of complex and interesting payroll conditions,” Dupuis said.
Stacey Cortez, Controller with the Interior Regional Housing Authority in Fairbanks, Alaska, said the workshop presentation emphasized the significance of correctly classifying employees as either exempt or nonexempt.
"He went into great detail about the importance of of employee classification, and the impact this can have on complianceif they are not classified appropriately," she said.
