Workshop Explores the Value of Payroll in the Workplace
Payroll professionals understand how vital their work is and how it touches every part of their organization, yet that value isn’t always easy to articulate to leadership.
Brent Skinner, Executive Community Lead for HR.com, presented the workshop “Three Ways to Help Organizational Leadership Understand Future Value in Payroll” today during Payroll Congress. Throughout the workshop, Skinner explored the disconnect between how payroll is often viewed and the broader value the department can provide.
“Payroll is not simply a back-office administrative process or a cost center to control. It is one of the most consistent and consequential touchpoints in the employee experience,” Skinner said. “Trust, retention, morale, compliance posture, and even leadership credibility are all influenced by payroll outcomes.”
Attendees learned how to think about payroll value beyond efficiency. They discussed ways to feel more confident when conveying this value to leadership teams in their organizations, using financial and strategic terms that leadership understands.
“I hope attendees will feel better equipped to explain that payroll is one of the most consistent and consequential touchpoints in the employee experience,” Skinner said. “Payroll accuracy and reliability create downstream organizational effects that are often invisible until something goes wrong. Trust, retention, morale, compliance posture, and leadership credibility are all influenced by payroll outcomes.”
These discussions around the value of payroll are more relevant than ever as organizations become more data-driven and interconnected. Payroll data can provide a more complete picture of an organization’s employee stability, operational readiness, and long-term health.
“Payroll sits at the intersection of finance, HR, compliance, and employee experience in a way that is much more visible than it was even a few years ago,” Skinner said. “Whether we are talking about pay transparency, global compliance, real-time payments, or artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled operations, payroll increasingly influences organizational trust and operational credibility. The profession is evolving faster than the narrative around it.”
