Workshop Covers Ins, Outs of Paid Sick Leave Mandates
Now that more than a year has passed since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted business as usual, two knowledgeable presenters explained paid sick leave requirements in the Wednesday Congress Xstream workshop “Paid Sick Leave: From Perk to Mandate.”
Lia Coniglio, Esq., APA’s Manager of State Payroll Information Resources, and Beth Baerman, Director of Communications and Compliance for Attendance on Demand, Inc., revealed how payroll departments need to act on key obligations of paid sick leave mandates. They covered topics such as accrual, usage, and carryover rates; pay rate calculations; and recordkeeping requirements.
On the federal side of the issue, they talked attendees through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), while on the state side they discussed California and New York requiring paid time off for employees to get COVID-19 vaccines.
California's complexity inspired Lesleigh Pagan, CPP, to write in the chat, "California is like a country on its own," while Sunny Riley, CPP, said, "I am thankful we're NOT in California."
They covered key elements of paid sick leave legislation and emphasized things to consider when setting up a new paid sick leave policy that follows state and local laws.
As the presentation concluded, Brent Gow, CPP, wrote, "Amazing presentation. Thank you Beth and Lia."
Robin Davis, CPP, added, "I always feel inspired to action after these sessions."
