The Role of Shared Service Centres in Global Payroll
In this insightful session, Sharon Tayfield, MCIPP, and Dion Bowden explored the evolving role of Shared Service Centres (SSCs) in global payroll and why they have become a strategic priority for modern organisations.
Framing payroll as the delivery of “the most important thing to your most important asset,” Sharon highlighted how SSCs are no longer simply a cost-saving mechanism, but a driver of consistency, compliance, scalability, and business value.
The session introduced the practical C.A.R.E.S. framework (Centralise, Automate, Risk-manage, Enhance, Scale), designed to help payroll leaders centralise risk mitigation, improve operational efficiency, and transform payroll data into meaningful business intelligence.
With more than 80% of Fortune 500 organisations in the United States now operating some form of SSC model, the discussion focused on what distinguishes a functional SSC from a truly world-class operation.
Alongside the benefits, Dion addressed the challenges of implementation, including organisational redesign, resistance to change, and growing competition for skilled payroll talent within SSC hubs.
The discussion also explored how technology transformation often runs in parallel with SSC implementation, requiring significant retraining and adaptation across teams.
A key theme throughout the session was the importance of cultural intelligence in global payroll operations.
From communication styles and decision-making approaches to leadership expectations and trust-building, the speakers emphasised that successful SSCs require more than process alignment — they require people alignment.
Attendees also gained practical guidance on assessing which payroll activities can realistically be centralised while maintaining regional compliance and stakeholder support.
Ultimately, the session reinforced that SSC success lies not just in structure or technology, but in aligning people, processes, and purpose to deliver lasting organisational value.
