Susan Marilyn “Sue” Darring, CPP, was a trailblazing leader in the payroll industry. The former President of PayrollOrg and President Emeritus of the Chicago Chapter passed away at her home on January 23.

You can celebrate the legacy of Sue while at the 42nd Annual Payroll Congress in Nashville this week. Visit the experiential tribute in the alcove outside the Ryman Exhibit Hall doors from 10:00 a.m. today until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8.

A Payroll Pioneer, Champion

One of the earliest members of PayrollOrg, Sue helped pioneer the Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification program. In 1990, she joined the Board of Directors before serving as President in 1998. She rejoined the board as Treasurer and later served as PayrollOrg’s first Corporate Member Advisor for 17 years. Sue completed her Board of Directors service as the longest-standing voting member in the association’s history. Sue received many accolades in her career including PayrollOrg’s Meritorious Service Award. In 2019, she received the Board of Directors Award and was named the first lifetime national member of PayrollOrg for her more than three decades of service.

“Over her many years of service… as a speaker, national leader, and volunteer, Sue has always given back to others. [PayrollOrg] owes Sue tremendous gratitude and respect for her years of selfless service,” Executive Director Dan Maddux said in 2019.

A Warm, Guiding Presence

Payroll Congress was especially important to Sue.

“I would recommend to all of you, that if you think this Congress is terrific, start coming to the business meetings and see how well run this organization is,” she said. “You’ll make the best friends. You’ll learn things you never thought you’d learn.”
