Mentorship Reimagined With Leadership Lens
Announced at Payroll Congress, PayrollOrg (PAYO) has launched Leadership Lens, a modern, video-based micro-mentorship series designed to meet payroll professionals exactly where they are in their leadership journey.
Payroll professionals understand that leadership is not defined by a title—it is shaped by continuous learning, professional growth, and the ability to influence teams and organizations in an increasingly complex environment.
Leadership Lens—an exclusive, free benefit for PAYO members—features two unique tracks, Leadership Launch and Leadership Edge, that both offer targeted, expert-led instruction in short, high-impact forms suitable for today's work environment. This format is meant to increase mentorship access, expedite the learning experience, and provide participants with practical tools they can use immediately.
Micro‑Mentoring
Traditional mentorship programs are effective but often require considerable time commitments from mentors and typically focus on pre-identified “high potential” employees. As a result, many skilled professionals may not receive meaningful development opportunities.
Leadership Lens addresses this gap through a sustainable micro-mentoring model that supports both professional and personal growth. Its flexible design empowers payroll practitioners to build leadership capability without the time burden of formal long-term programs.
“Payroll professionals, regardless of their role, benefit from multiple leaders committed to sharing their diverse perspectives, leadership styles, and practical strategies that can be applied right away,” said Lametric Patterson, Ed.S, Senior Learning and Development Strategist for PayrollOrg and the series creator.
Program Overview, Structure
Each track covers 12 carefully-selected leadership topics, presented in three short video segments. Participants may also join a live master class with Q&A for expanded learning or attend quarterly expert-led small group sessions for specialized coaching in a collaborative environment.
To keep development visible and motivational, digital badges are provided once all the steps for a chosen pathway are completed. The badges then stack up toward a full program badge and certificate at the end of a track—tangible proof of leadership growth and readiness for expanded responsibilities or advancement opportunities. (For more information about PayrollOrg’s digital badges, read the article in the May PAYTECH issue).
With its modern, intentional design, the series ensures that every payroll professional, whether taking on leadership for the first time or managing executive level difficulties, can develop the skills, mindset, and confidence needed for success.
Leadership Launch for Early Leaders
Leadership Launch is intended for early-to-mid-career payroll professionals looking to establish their leadership identities and expand their responsibilities. Its micro-mentoring themes are critical building blocks for anybody ready to manage teams, lead initiatives, or collaborate through cross-functional partnerships.
“Because leaders are expected to be self-starters capable of upskilling, reskilling, and adapting quickly to meet the shifting priorities of payroll, Leadership Launch accelerates early-career professionals’ growth by offering direct access to the collective experiences of respected payroll leaders,” Patterson said. “Payroll professionals gain wisdom that otherwise might have taken years of trial and error to acquire.”
Across three curated pathways, participants improve their communication skills, boost agility, establish credibility, and learn how to interact more successfully in a rapidly-evolving payroll landscape.
Leadership Edge for Mid-Career Leaders
Leadership Edge provides advanced coaching to experienced professionals responsible for higher-stakes decision-making, organizational change, and complex stakeholder interactions. This track addresses real-world challenges for top payroll leaders, including cross-functional impact, ethical leadership difficulties, rapid operational shifts, and the need for strong executive presence.
“Leadership Edge highlights many of the skills and mindsets required to meet expectations and drive processes, teams, and organizations forward,” Patterson said. “Industry experts share the strategies and tactics they used to manage conflicts, adapt to change, and overcome issues that seemed insurmountable.”
Through three themed pathways, the program develops strategic judgment, increases resilience, and prepares leaders to act boldly when the stakes are high.

A More Accessible Path to Leadership Development
The Leadership Lens series democratizes mentorship by eliminating barriers such as lengthy meetings, formal mentor matching, and intense scheduling. Instead, it offers focused, flexible, expertly-guided learning that fits into the realities of modern work life.
The program supports payroll professionals through the following:
- Enhanced Engagement—Added opportunities to connect with leaders and peers across the payroll community through topic videos, master classes, and small‑group sessions
- Association Commitment—PayrollOrg offers long‑term commitment with stage‑specific guidance and visible credentials, keeping you supported and invested
- Culture of Continuous Improvement—Regular, bite‑sized learning nurtures a growth mindset and strengthens the profession as a whole
- Redefined Mentorship—High‑quality guidance without the bandwidth demands of traditional one‑to‑one programs
“Payroll professionals have shifted from being transactional processors to strategic business partners,” said Patterson. "More payroll leaders now operate as strategic partners influencing organizational performance and employee trust. Through cross-functional leadership, they are expected to provide insights on workforce costs, forecasting, and labor trends that inform executive decisions.”
