Industry expert Reuben Thompson-Amarteifio, CPP, delivered an inspiring presentation that struck a chord with payroll professionals across all levels. Now the Head of Global Payroll at DoorDash, Thompson-Amarteifio shared his unlikely path to payroll, beginning as the son of Ghanaian immigrants who expected him to pursue medicine, law, or engineering. Instead, he majored in sociology and aspired to be a high school principal.

A summer job at Wells Fargo Payroll Solutions unexpectedly set him on a new course. That one role led to a thriving payroll career spanning Wells Fargo, Google, and Coinbase. Along the way, he’s built a reputation for innovation and strategic thinking in global payroll operations.

Thompson-Amarteifio emphasized viewing payroll vendors as true partners and encouraged attendees to focus on continuous learning.

“Stay curious in your career; every job will teach valuable lessons,” he advised. He also challenged the crowd to rethink career growth: “Don’t chase titles, chase scope, which will unlock even greater opportunities.”

His story served as a reminder that purpose can evolve—and that dedication, humility, and curiosity can take a payroll professional far beyond where they started.

“His beginnings were very inspiring. We see everyone and see how successful they are, and we forget that we all start somewhere. He started as a file clerk as a bookkeeper and look where he is now.”
