Industry Expert Jamie Phillips, CPP, Encourages Lifelong Learning
Jamie Phillips, CPP, who was named the 2026 Payroll Man of the Year at the 44th Annual Payroll Congress Opening General Session, doesn’t waste time.
Whether he’s biking 12 miles each morning or keeping up the pace throughout the day, Phillips is always on the move.
Growing up, Phillips always believed that he would become a teacher. Earning two master’s degrees after 50, the payroll consultant never became a teacher.
Instead, he is a lifelong learner, and he urges others in the payroll profession to follow his example.
“Payroll professionals often struggle with change, but I urge you to consider innovation,” Phillips said. “Lifelong learning is a mindset. It's about staying curious and staying relevant about what lies ahead. Ask yourself regularly: What could I do better?”
For most of his three decades in the payroll industry, Phillips has learned most of what he knows about payroll through what most would call hands-on experience. This insatiable drive fostered his love of learning.
He said he recognized payroll professionals aren’t always apt to change, but he said to at least consider innovative tools.
“We live in a world where tech evolves at lightning speed,” Phillips said. “Payroll is no different, yet many organizations are stuck. My role is not to tell clients to replace everything. But I helped them see how innovation can help. This approach only saves time and reduces errors, but it builds confidence.”
Leaving the conference, Phillips had one last message to share with attendees.
“Whether it's new tech or deepening a skill, investing in yourself is the single best way to thrive,” he said.
