Workday saw a need to provide information about multi-state payroll laws, and the Learning Lounge provided the right venue.

“We wanted an opportunity to engage with attendees in a comfortable setting where they could learn about trends in payroll law and ask an expert questions,” Gilbert Castro, FPC, Senior Legal Counsel at Workday, said of the company’s decision to sponsor the Learning Lounge in the Expo Hall.

Yesterday’s 5 p.m. Learning Lounge Session, “Stateside Scramble: Top Payroll Tips for a Mobile Workforce,” featured Tom Cryan, Esq., who gave attendees an overview of three challenges associated with managing payroll for employees in multiple states:

  • Tax treatment of travel per diems
  • State taxation of nonresident employees
  • Tracking and taxing of non-qualified deferred compensation

This was just the kind of information that 30-year payroll professional, but first-time attendee, Ardene Myers was looking for.

“I remember when we only had employees in three states,” said the Payroll Research and Reporting Coordinator at Noridian Mutual Insurance Company. “Now we have a lot of telecommuters working everywhere, and I want to be better equipped to manage this trend as we continue to expand.”

Connie Brackett, CPP, Payroll Supervisor at Victaulic, echoed her sentiments.

“It was very helpful to learn about taxation laws in different states,” she said, noting that her company operates in 48 of them.
