Every year, dedicated payroll professionals teach paycheck basics to young adults on Money Matters National Education Day (MMNED), which is held annually during National Payroll Week. All chapter members are encouraged to volunteer on the NPW website to get involved with Money Matters National Education Day and give back to their communities.
The MMNED presentation and curriculum are optimized to be presented virtually or in-person. We encourage volunteers to consider presenting their lessons virtually to ensure a safe and beneficial lesson for all. This year, MMNED will be celebrated on September 9, but payroll professionals can volunteer to make presentations to local youths through October 31. Volunteers are eligible to earn one RCH for teaching an MMNED lesson, and all volunteers will receive a special citation from APA.
Many chapters host other volunteer events throughout the year, too.
On April 22, 2021, the Hampton Roads Chapter held a volunteer event in coordination with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Seven of their members participated in the event. As a result of their efforts, the chapter packaged a total of 155 boxed goods.
The food bank has maintained a strong presence in the community with a clear mission to eliminate hunger by hosting Food and Fund drives, organizing and distributing food, and recruiting and supporting partner agencies. The volunteer event coincided with National Volunteer Week, which took place across the country from April 18-24 and seeks to recognize “the power of volunteers to tackle society’s greatest challenges.” At the conclusion of the event, a total of $715 was raised and was gifted to the food pantry in support of their mission and ongoing community efforts.
Although the pandemic has posed challenges for everyone, the Hampton Roads Chapter’s event was a huge success. It allowed members to give back to their community and help families in need. The chapter’s next volunteer event will be happening during National Payroll Week and will be held in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity.
