The Costume Contest at APA’s Annual Congress is an attendee-favorite and a fun opportunity to show off your creativity. In this week’s blog John Lestock, CPP, Government Liaison of the Rainier Chapter, shares with you his experience preparing for, entering, and ultimately placing in the 2018 contest’s Absolutely Evil category as “Dr. Crypto”.
What was your experience like at the costume contest?
I had a wonderful experience at the costume contest. All the contestants were supportive of one another, and we were laughing and joking with the crowd. Honestly, I don’t think winning was a priority for many of us. We were there to have fun, show off our costumes, and entertain ourselves as well as the audience. I think the Congress themes of having fun, bonding with friends, supporting each other, and being inclusive so that everyone has a good time were qualities that made the costume contest so much fun. Many of us are normally terrified of getting up in front of a crowd wearing a costume and being silly. The atmosphere was so fun and supportive that it encouraged us to take a chance and put ourselves out there on stage for everyone to see.
What inspired your costume?
I thought it would be fun to be a villain. I didn’t have the right costume to be Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies, but I did have a really cool silver suit. So I thought, “Let’s make up a character - maybe someone that could have been Dr. Evil’s first cousin.” I also wanted the villain to be a bit more contemporary. I read an article about bitcoins and cryptocurrency, and the character’s name just popped in my head. “Why not call him Dr. Crypto?” He would be a mad genius who’s notorious for manipulating and crashing world financial markets with his cryptocurrencies. Plus, he cheats at solitaire, which makes him even more diabolical.
What was your process for putting the costume together?
The process was pretty straightforward. I didn’t want to have too many crazy details that would distract from the costume, like an eyepatch or a scar or even a bald cap. I decided on a black shirt and tie which contrasted nicely against the silver suit. Dark and flashy – just like Dr. Crypto himself. Adding the little lizard cat to hold and pet was a nice final touch. Dr. Evil has his cat, why can’t I have mine?
What were your thoughts when you found out you won?
I was absolutely surprised! I was floored! I didn’t think I’d win anything at all, and to get third place was absolutely a thrill. I loved it! I’m proud of my sash. It’s proudly displayed in my home office next to the bookcase with all of my American Payroll Association publications.
