Janine Martins, President of the Silicon Valley Chapter, offers insights into the chapter’s journey and the factors contributing to their impressive 40-year success.
- Tell us about your chapter?
Silicon Valley Chapter was founded August 23, 1983. We currently have 61 members.
- What do you feel are your secrets to success?
I feel that the people in our chapter are what kept it alive the last 40 years. We advertise our chapter via social media by inviting people to our meetings. We also attend the annual chapter social at the California Payroll Conference to try and get our name out there in addition to word of mouth from our members and the vendors we partner with like Workday, rapid!, and Robert Half for example.
- Tell us about yourself?
I have been working in payroll since 1999. A total of 24 years, believe it or not. I am originally born and raised in the heart of Silicon Valley in the city of San Jose, CA. I now work from home in Lathrop, CA. I have been chapter president since 2022 and before that I was the Treasurer for the Silicon Valley Chapter for two years from 2020-2021. Fun fact, I am a huge Disney fan and every chance I get, I spend time in the Disney parks in California and Florida. I feel it is a great way to get away from the stress of payroll and to take my mind to a fun place.
- What about your chapter are you most proud of?
I am proud of being a part of such a great group of people. I have been a member since 2012. Going to the meetings and learning from others has always been fun to me and now to be the President of the Silicon Valley chapter is icing on the cake. I have always looked up to our Chapter leaders and to now be one of them is an amazing feeling. I am excited to pass the baton to the upcoming President.
- What is your favorite part of being Chapter President?
I love putting together events where payroll professionals can network and learn from one another. I personally enjoy training, and this is a great way to have people come together and learn about payroll related topics via Zoom or in person.
- Do you have any advice for chapters that may be struggling?
I think that networking is the best tool out there to get members & speakers to attend our meetings. Attending PayrollOrg conferences and chapter statewides/ regional meetings is the best way to network with other payroll professionals. You learn things from others, have fun while learning, get to meet new people, and get your name out there. I have also learned having the option to provide remote chapter meetings held over Zoom, has definitely helped with attendance post Covid.
