Since its launch in 1984, the Atlanta Chapter and its members have embraced the values of charity and giving back to our local communities. Our members have always stepped forward not only to attain the chapter’s charitable goals but exceed them!
Like many chapters of the APA, we hold an educational meeting each month. In addition to chapter business and an educational topic, we also select a deserving organization to promote at each meeting. The communities we serve greatly appreciate the efforts of our chapter members.
Our current Community Service Coordinator, Stacey Seminara, CPP says, “Community service is a great way for our chapter members to give back to local communities. I feel that we are making a difference in the lives of others.” Each month, Seminara ensures, with input from other chapter members, that we have at least one charity project during our meeting by reaching out to local organizations. Donations and funding are always needed.
For example, the Atlanta Chapter annually participates in the Red Nose Day campaign sponsored by Walgreens. This year, due to the pandemic, the event was moved online but our members did not disappoint! We were still able to raise donations and get our own digital “red nose.”
In addition, there are many charitable projects that do not require monetary donations. We have found that our members like to be hands-on in our monthly activities. For example, during our 2018 Statewide Conference, attendees helped assemble Halloween treat bags for children with Village of Hope. This organization supports the homeless and others in need in the metro area outside of Atlanta, GA.
Other monthly activities have included writing thank you notes to our troops abroad, collecting books for homeless shelters, and donating school supplies for the local “Stuff the Bus” drive. December is an especially meaningful time for us as we celebrate our accomplishments for the year and contribute Christmas gifts for children in need. Bringing a gift for someone less fortunate reminds us that, as we celebrate, we should look out for those who may not be able to do so.
